Claude Code Creator Advises Wiping Config Files Every 6 Months

FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-08-01

Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, offers a counter-intuitive workflow tip: every 6 months, you should delete your CLAUDE.md, Skills, and Hooks to test the model with a clean slate.

The core reasoning is that as base models rapidly improve (e.g., upgrading to Opus 5), the extensive rules and constraints you previously wrote for older models may have transitioned from being 'helpful' to 'restrictive'. Periodically wiping your config helps discover the model's native boundaries and prevents outdated presets from holding back its performance.
