Agent Coding Cost Showdown: Claude Code Costs 3.7x More Than Open-Source

Teknium · x · 2026-08-01

Jason retweeted a cost comparison by Composio across major coding agents. Hermes Agent and Pi Agent lead with the lowest average cost per task ($0.39), followed by Codex, OpenCode, and Kimi Code ($0.47-$0.54). Claude Code sits at $1.47, costing about 3.7x as much as the cheapest options. Median costs reflect a similar gap.

Jason commented that the industry is dramatically lowering token costs while increasing capability. He argues AI is currently underhyped, predicting that user behavior will change dramatically once tokens become virtually free.
