Stripe Reportedly Eyes $10B Acquisition of OpenRouter to Dominate AI Token Economy

Payments giant Stripe is in talks to acquire AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter at a valuation nearing $10 billion. OpenRouter boasts an annualized revenue of $140 million, nearly 70% gross margins, and over 8 million developers.

Stripe's Strategic Logic

Stripe aims to expand from 'human payments' to 'machine and agent payments.' Tokens are the new payment unit of the AI era. Acquiring OpenRouter allows Stripe to extend its infrastructure from e-commerce payments into the underlying layer of AI model invocations, controlling the 'taxation power' of the intelligent economy.

The AI Gateway Business Model

OpenRouter connects hundreds of LLMs with applications via smart routing, solving multi-account management pain points for developers. It promises no data retention and charges a 5% platform fee. Other players include Portkey (acquired) and the open-source LiteLLM.
