OpenAI officially announced major price cuts: GPT-5.6 Luna input price dropped 80% to $0.20 per million tokens, and output to $1.20. GPT-5.6 Terra decreased by 20% to $2/$12. Additionally, GPT-5.6 Sol gets a Fast mode in the API, offering 2.5x the speed for 2x the price while maintaining the same intelligence.
Following the update, developers noted that if frontier models maintain such aggressive pricing, the extreme cost-effectiveness could render the open-source vs. closed-source debate irrelevant, as pure productivity and price would dominate.
