How Synaptic Clustering Affects Learning: Computational Model Reveals Causal Mechanism

A preprint study investigates the causal role of functional synapse clusters (FSCs) in learning. The researchers introduced Dendrinet, an artificial neural network architecture featuring hierarchical dendritic segments and sparse synapses, training it on a Permuted-Covariance Classification (PCC) task.

Experiments revealed that the network naturally develops excitatory and inhibitory FSCs to solve the task. Disabling dendritic nonlinearities degraded performance and reduced excitatory clusters, while shuffling the learned synaptic connectivity entirely destroyed the network's performance. This computationally confirms the necessity of specific synaptic spatial arrangements for neuronal information processing.
