US Frontier Firms Near Fully Automating AI R&D Loop, Raising Explosion Risks

@hamandcheese noted in a long tweet that several leading US AI companies are on the precipice of fully automating the AI R&D loop.
- Scope of Automation: The loop includes pre/post training, environment creation, data generation, evals, algorithm and kernel design, and architecture search.
- Risks of Phase Change: We are currently in a regime of weak Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) via partially automated SWEs. Closing the loop altogether represents a difference in kind, potentially leading to explosive and uncontrollable progress.
