Google Earth briefly introduced an AI feature powered by the Nano Banana 2 image generator, allowing users to modify real satellite imagery directly within the app. Google initially promoted the tool as a way to "generate concepts grounded in the real world."
However, users quickly shared examples of AI-altered images of real locations, sparking significant concerns about the potential for misinformation and disinformation. Google swiftly retracted the feature in response to the backlash.
