Study Reveals Amazon Flooded with AI-Generated Books, Crowding Out Human Authors

A new paper on AI and copyright utilized full-text AI detection to study self-published genre fiction sold on Amazon from 2023 to March 2026.
The research reveals that Amazon is flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text. These books are not only earning significant revenue but, more importantly, are crowding out the sales of non-AI books. The study notes that a book doesn't need to be high quality to have a market impact; it just needs to exist in the thousands, which Generative AI easily enables, thereby causing a substantial impact on human authors.
