Google Earth's AI Image Generator Can Easily Fabricate War Zones and Refugee Crises

The Verge AI · rss · 2026-08-01

Google recently integrated an AI image generator into Google Earth, allowing users to create highly misleading images from satellite and 3D imagery using just a simple text prompt.

Investigative journalist Henk van Ess demonstrated the potential for abuse, including generating fabricated scenes like "refugees near the Mexican border" and "a bomb crater near a hospital in Gaza." Google responded by stating they take misinformation seriously, noting that all generated images include a SynthID digital watermark, allowing users to verify if an image is AI-generated via the Gemini app or Google Lens.
