Hugging Face Attacked by Secret Proprietary Models, Defended by Open Source

Hugging Face co-founder Clement Delangue revealed that the platform was recently attacked by secret, unreleased proprietary models, but successfully defended itself using an open-source model.

He emphasized that banning open-source models would first harm cybersecurity defenders, startups, and researchers who are not frontier labs, as they need on-prem, affordable, and controllable models to compete and protect themselves. Researcher Sundeep added that for a world with closed models to be truly safe, it requires the vibrancy of a thriving open-source ecosystem.
