Developer Burns 50M Tokens on a Single Task Due to Unmanaged Thread
msg · x · 2026-08-01
Developer @msg shared a shocking API usage bill caused by failing to start a new conversation thread, burning roughly 50 million tokens in a single task.
- Token Breakdown: Input tokens accounted for nearly 49.9 million, with 47.3 million hitting the cache and 2.5 million uncached. Output tokens were around 128,000 (including 40,000 reasoning tokens).
- Cost: At standard API pricing, this would cost $40.41, but it was covered by the user's $200 monthly plan.
The task originally stemmed from the user struggling with text alignment in an image generation tool, prompting him to ask the AI to build a custom layout tool instead.
