Suno Loses Landmark Copyright Case as German Court Rules Against AI Music Training

AI music generation platform Suno has lost a landmark copyright lawsuit in Germany. The Munich Regional Court ruled that Suno violated German and US copyright laws by training its AI models on songs from the German collecting society GEMA's catalog without authorization, storing and reproducing the works.
The court's decision requires AI companies to pay licensing fees for the systematic commercial use of copyrighted music. Suno had partially acknowledged using GEMA members' songs for training in 2024. This ruling marks another major legal victory for music rights holders in their efforts to curb the unauthorized use of copyrighted material by AI firms.
