ChatGPT's Irreversible Project Memory Setting Poses Isolation Risks for Pros
dbuchal · reddit · 2026-07-31
A Reddit user highlights a critical design flaw in ChatGPT Projects: memory settings cannot be changed after project creation, posing severe data isolation risks for professional users.
If a project is created with 'standard memory,' it cannot be converted to 'project-only memory' later. This means conversations inside the project could cross-pollinate with the global account, defeating the purpose of using separate projects for different clients, companies, or confidential contexts (e.g., for lawyers, consultants, developers).
The only official workaround is to create a new project and manually migrate chats and instructions. More alarmingly, users report that even 'project-only memory' has occasionally leaked info across contexts, and OpenAI's documentation fails to adequately warn about these limitations.
