Stanford HAI report: mental health AI governance lags, three critical challenges identified

Stanford HAI and Stanford Medicine hosted a policy workshop identifying critical gaps in regulating AI tools for mental health. Three challenges: lack of clear regulation, lack of standardized third-party testing, and risks from general-purpose chatbots and companion bots (e.g., ChatGPT, Character.ai, Replika) in emotional support. While AI promises greater access and lower cost, it risks substandard care and user harm, including minors' unhealthy attachments and inadequate crisis responses.
