FT Explains: How the AI Stock Plunge Triggered Situational Awareness' Collapse
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-07-31
The Financial Times published an analysis detailing the financing failure and collapse of the hedge fund Situational Awareness.
The fund had concentrated billions in AI-linked stocks and borrowed against the portfolio. As AI prices fell, both its capital and lenders' collateral weakened. Lenders pressured it to raise capital or reduce exposure, forcing the fund to sell into the decline, crystallizing losses and further weakening remaining collateral.
Citadel eventually acquired most of its roughly $16B public book, while Situational retained private stakes like Anthropic. The article notes a clear financing failure: financing a multi-year technology view with borrowing that prime brokers reassess daily, a mismatch that left no room for recovery when correlated AI holdings fell together.
