Google Earth Integrates Nano Banana 2 for AI Image Generation, Sparking Misinformation Debate

Google Earth on the web now integrates the Nano Banana 2 model, allowing users to generate AI images of any location based on real coordinates via text prompts, complete with SynthID watermarks and C2PA credentials.
Researcher Felix Simon finds the feature gimmicky but pushes back against claims that it will be a misinformation disaster. He argues it doesn't alter the underlying satellite imagery for investigators and other sources remain available, so it doesn't inherently devalue satellite evidence.
He notes the real shift is 'indexical discounting': people no longer trust things simply because they look real. To combat fabricated evidence, audiences will increasingly rely on other markers like source, logical consistency, and prior knowledge.
