Developer Uses Flashing QR Codes to Transfer Files Between Phones with Zero Network

A developer has built a way to transfer files between two phones without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or any network connection.
The core mechanism relies on one device's screen displaying an endless stream of animated QR codes, while the other device points its camera at the screen to rebuild the file. No pairing or apps are required.
- Speed: It pulls about 129 kb/s, transferring a full 2MB image in seconds.
- Error Handling: Because there is no back-channel, the receiver can never request missed frames. It uses fountain codes, meaning every frame is a scrambled mix of the entire file rather than a single piece. The receiver just collects any frames it can catch in any order, and once it has enough data, it reconstructs the whole file. Dropping frames costs a little time but never breaks the transfer, allowing users to join mid-stream.
