ICLR 2027 Enforces Submission Quotas to Curb Paper Inflation

thegautamkamath · x · 2026-07-31

The top machine learning conference ICLR 2027 has introduced strict authorship quotas: a maximum of 20 submissions per author, and a limit of one submission for teams where no author has a prior paper accepted at a major ML conference.

Prominent researcher Alex Dimakis endorsed the policy, suggesting even stricter caps like five submissions per author. He argued that researchers should be evaluated by their best papers rather than sheer volume. Furthermore, he noted that seeing a candidate with 10-15 papers at a single conference is now considered a negative signal in faculty recruitment.
