LightOn releases fully open multilingual retrieval models mDenseOn & mLateOn
IgorCarron · x · 2026-07-31
LightOn announced the release of mDenseOn and mLateOn, their next generation of fully open models designed for multilingual, long-context, and code retrieval. The author reflected on their journey, from building ModernBERT and Ettin to establish new encoder standards, to developing PyLate for late interaction, and using carefully curated data to create frontier models like DenseOn and LateOn outside of closed labs. This release compiles their previous work, extending frontier performance to multilingual capabilities while maintaining full openness.
