Andrew Ng at Stanford: AI Multiplies CS Fundamentals, "Don't Learn to Code" Is Terrible Advice

Speaking at Stanford, Andrew Ng dismissed the notion that students should skip Computer Science because AI will automate coding, calling it the worst career advice of the decade.
Using an analogy from Midjourney, he noted that someone who understands art history can generate masterpieces using precise vocabulary, while a novice cannot. Similarly, AI makes CS fundamentals more important than ever, acting as the required vocabulary to control the technology.
Ng outlined his current hiring hierarchy:
- Level 1: 10 years of experience but codes strictly by hand (Won't hire)
- Level 2: Fresh grads highly fluent in AI-assisted coding (Hired over veterans)
- Level 3 (God Tier): Deeply understands CS fundamentals AND uses AI-assisted coding.
He concluded that AI doesn't replace fundamentals; it multiplies them, comparing the current shift to the transition from punch cards to keyboards.
