Andrew Ng at Stanford: 'Don't Learn to Code' Is the Worst Advice of the Decade

techNmak · x · 2026-07-31

Andrew Ng recently pushed back against the narrative that AI will automate all programming and that students should skip Computer Science, calling it the worst career advice of the decade during a Stanford lecture.

He used a personal analogy: when he tried to generate images using Midjourney with basic prompts, the results were poor. However, his collaborator, who understood Art History, was able to create stunning visuals. This demonstrates that having foundational domain knowledge is critical for effectively steering AI tools, and a CS education provides exactly the structural thinking needed.
