Microsoft Open-Sources Data Formulator: AI Agent for Local Data Exploration
thisdudelikesAI · x · 2026-07-31
Microsoft Research has open-sourced Data Formulator, an AI-powered data exploration tool that allows users to analyze data with AI agents on their own hardware, eliminating the need to hand over data warehouses to third-party BI vendors.
The tool supports various models via LiteLLM, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and local models via Ollama. Version 0.7 introduces connectors for governed data sources, a unified DataAgent with thread memory, a Flint semantic chart engine supporting 30+ chart types, and a style refinement agent. The 0.8 alpha adds conversational database loading and a Databricks connector. The project has garnered 15.9k stars on GitHub.
