Ex-OpenAI Exec's AI Fund Liquidated: Leveraged Compute Bets Force Margin Call
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-07-31
The fund "Situational Awareness," founded by former OpenAI board member and prominent AGI advocate Aschenbrenner, faced a devastating liquidation. The fund was heavily bullish on AI infrastructure, taking large positions in chips, storage, data centers, and power utilities, while shorting software companies like Adobe.
However, a recent plunge in AI hardware stocks coupled with a rebound in software stocks hit their dual-direction strategy hard. Facing margin calls due to leverage, the fund was forced to sell most of its public equity portfolio to Citadel. While the long-term thesis on AI compute demand may remain valid, leveraged trading could not withstand the short-term volatility.
