DeepMind Dissolves AlphaFold Team; Quarter of Original Authors Have Left

Google DeepMind has reportedly dissolved the dedicated team behind AlphaFold, the breakthrough protein structure prediction system that earned Demis Hassabis and John Jumper the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
As part of a strategic shift, DeepMind is moving away from dedicated grand-challenge teams toward using Gemini as a coordinating layer across scientific research. Nearly 25% of the original AlphaFold paper authors have left the company, with some core members being poached by competitors like Anthropic. This marks a significant shift in the organizational model that previously produced some of AI's biggest scientific wins.
