Google Responds to AI Misinformation Concerns: Gemini Images Embed SynthID Watermarks
henkvaness · x · 2026-07-31
Following user tests showing Gemini-generated images could be used to create fake geographic misinformation (such as fabricated refugees or nuclear plants), Google issued an official response.
Google stated that its image generation model (Nano Banana) already includes SynthID digital watermarks. Users questioning an image's authenticity can use the Gemini app or Google Lens to check if it is AI-generated. The company also noted that it blocks image creation on harmful topics and continually updates its safety protections.
