Energy Consumption: Single AI Prompt vs Agentic Workflow Differs by 100,000x
AndyMasley · x · 2026-07-31
Citing data, the post highlights a massive energy discrepancy: while a single AI chatbot prompt consumes negligible energy (less than 1% of a phone charge), executing a full agentic AI workflow consumes enough power to run a microwave for half an hour.
Although both are termed "AI," their energy consumption in data centers differs by five orders of magnitude (100,000x). The author adds that it would take about 1000 Wh of data center usage to increase an average American's daily emissions by 1%.
