Doubao Phone Shifts from GUI to MCP: The Commercial Battle Behind Agent Smartphones
创业邦 · wechat · 2026-07-31
ByteDance's Doubao phone has significantly shifted its strategy, abandoning its previously highlighted GUI capabilities—such as reading screens and simulating clicks on WeChat and Taobao. Instead, it now requires apps to proactively provide MCP services and open permissions. This reflects a realistic boundary for Agent phones in their early commercialization: app vendors are unwilling to let external AI operate freely within their boundaries.
Three distinct routes have emerged in the industry: Doubao's lightweight model integration with Nubia; StepFun's full-stack approach developing its own model, OS, and hardware; and Honor's strategy of fortifying its native OS while integrating external models. Regardless of the route, all must negotiate with super-apps.
The article notes that system Agents aim to shift the initiation of user tasks to the OS layer, threatening the traffic and transaction gateways of super-apps. A more likely future involves a division of labor between system Agents and App Agents: the system handles user intent via device context, while the app retains control over business logic and transactions. Structured interfaces like MCP and AppIntents are becoming the new contracts for defining permissions and interests among stakeholders.
