As major AI conferences universally implement mandatory peer-review policies for submitters, reviewing has shifted from voluntary work to an obligation. However, baseless and abstract criticisms remain rampant.
Urgent Need for Quality Control:
Many reviews merely state that the paper "lacks novelty" or "misses comparisons" without specifying how it overlaps with prior work or what exact experiments are needed. Such irresponsible scoring fails to help authors improve and can ruin research opportunities.
The author argues that since reviewing is now a strict obligation tied to submissions, conferences must look beyond mere quantity and establish baseline professional standards. Low-scoring reviews, for instance, should be required to provide concrete comparative evidence and actionable suggestions, putting an end to the culture of dismissive one-liner reviews.
