OpenAI Slashes GPT-5.6 Prices by Up to 80%, Undercutting Rivals

Simon Willison · rss · 2026-07-31

OpenAI announced massive price reductions for its GPT-5.6 family, with Terra dropping 20% and Luna seeing an 80% cut. The savings are attributed to the GPT-5.6 Sol model, which autonomously optimized inference and production kernels, reducing end-to-end serving costs by 20%.

This price drop completely reshapes the low-cost model landscape: Luna is now cheaper than Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite and costs only a fifth of the input price of Anthropic's cheapest model, Claude Haiku 4.5.
