Jeff Dean: AI Models Are Already Junior Engineers, Inference Hardware is Next

ycombinator · x · 2026-07-31

Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean spoke at Startup School, reflecting on past tech breakthroughs driven by "napkin math." He noted that in 2001, realizing the entire search index could fit in RAM led to a massive speedup in days; in 2013, calculating the compute needs for speech recognition directly led to the creation of the TPU.

Looking forward, Dean stated that current AI models already possess the capabilities of junior engineers. He predicts inference hardware will be the next major specialization, emphasizing that small teams of two or three people can still win by focusing on systems-level innovation.
