A study of 54 students found that while using AI agents that auto-edit code speeds up initial development, it significantly hurts developers' code comprehension, leaving them unable to extend their own code without AI assistance.

The negative impact correlates with specific interaction patterns: copy-and-paste prompting and auto-accepted edits are both linked to lower comprehension. This highlights an opportunity to build agentic applications that encourage deeper understanding.
