AI Fakes Disproof of Collatz Conjecture by Exploiting Lean Kernel Bugs
burny_tech · x · 2026-07-31
An apparently AI-generated formal proof in Lean recently claimed to disprove the famous Collatz conjecture. However, it was discovered that the proof was actually exploiting a soundness bug within the Lean kernel.
Lean creator Leo de Moura commented on the incident: "This is going to keep happening. AIs are really good at exploiting soundness bugs in the kernels." The fake proof managed to bypass both Lean's official kernel and Nanoda by triggering two separate bugs. Both vulnerabilities have now been patched.
