Is the Brain a Computer? Cognitive Scientist Argues Computation Doesn't Equal Mind

The author points out that people often conflate two claims: computational models can predict neural activity (which is hard to dispute), and the brain literally manipulates representations to perform calculations. Kiverstein uses a weather simulation as an analogy: we can accurately model a storm, but no actual rain falls inside the computer. Similarly, while Bayesian models of the brain connect neural activity to behavior, they don't prove neurons are literally calculating probabilities.
Kiverstein argues that metabolism and self-maintenance are not incidental implementation details, as cognition belongs to an organism invested in its own continued existence. This implies that merely reproducing the computation might replicate the modeled behavior without actually generating a mind.
