OpenAI Slashes GPT-5.6 Prices; Researcher Argues Frontier Labs Hold Margin Advantage
rwang07 · x · 2026-07-31
OpenAI announced major price cuts for its GPT-5.6 lineup:
- Luna: Input prices dropped by 80% to $0.20 per million tokens, output to $1.20.
- Terra: Prices reduced by 20% to $2/$12.
- Sol: Gets a Fast mode in the API, offering 2.5x the speed for 2x the price while maintaining the same intelligence.
Commenting on the cuts, researcher Nat Lambert argued that frontier labs can integrate and optimize inference at lower costs than most open models. This margin advantage means closed models are likely highly profitable, and he doubts these labs are losing money.
