GitHub Introduces Stacked PRs to Break Large Code Changes into Reviewable Chains
uwukko · x · 2026-07-31
GitHub's official documentation now features a guide on Stacked Pull Requests. This functionality allows developers to break massive code changes into a chain of smaller, dependent pull requests that can be reviewed and merged independently.
The documentation details how to create and manage these stacked PRs using the gh stack extension via the GitHub CLI. It also covers best practices for optimizing GitHub Actions CI workflows to reduce redundant runs, as well as strategies for merging the stack from the bottom up or in contiguous groups.
