TMLR Submissions 4x'd: AI-Generated Junk Forces Academic Gatekeeping

thegautamkamath · x · 2026-07-31

Submissions to TMLR (Transactions on Machine Learning Research) have quadrupled recently, largely fueled by single authors with no previous ML background. One reviewer reported that out of 4 recently assigned papers, 2 were desk-rejected, 1 was withdrawn post-review, and 1 was desk-rejected post-review. The 2 papers actually reviewed received abysmal 1.5/5 scores (meaning 'technically ML, but garbage').

The proliferation of AI-generated content is severely disrupting the academic publishing system. Insiders predict this will force academia to introduce stricter gatekeeping and credentialism in the short term to combat the worsening quality crisis.
