TMLR Submissions Quadruple, Raising Concerns Over AI-Generated Papers

Submissions to the machine learning journal TMLR (Transactions on Machine Learning Research) have recently quadrupled. This surge is largely fueled by single authors who have no previous ML publication records.
This phenomenon is seen as a direct consequence of the proliferation of AI-generated paper spam. Industry insiders worry that to combat this influx of low-quality content, academic publishing will face a short-term increase in gatekeeping and credentialism, which could negatively impact normal academic exchange.
