Study Shows Claude 3 Opus Attention Mechanism is Turing Complete

A recent study summarizes experiments showing that, under the right conditions, the attention mechanism in Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus is Turing complete and can function as a universal computer.
The researchers successfully ran cellular automata and other programs on the model within a single context window. The author notes that as long as the minimum number of steps for a task can be encoded within a single context window, the model can execute it, making it only memory-bounded.
