A leaked Anthropic document revealed during court proceedings exposes "Project Panama," a secret initiative to destructively scan books globally. The internal file explicitly stated: "We don't want it to be known that we are working on this."
Following lawsuits over downloading 7 million books from pirate sites to train Claude, Anthropic sought a legal workaround. They purchased millions of physical books, cut off the spines with hydraulic blades for scanning, and recycled the remains.
