Planaria Regrow Barium-Insensitive Heads: Study on Transcriptional Solutions

A new preprint by Michael Levin et al. reveals a bizarre biological phenomenon and its underlying mechanism:
When planaria are exposed to barium (a K+ channel blocker), their heads literally explode and fall off. Remarkably, however, they quickly grow new heads that are barium-insensitive.
While previous research identified the specific genes regulated to achieve this, the sequencing was done in combined batches. In this new paper, the researchers analyze individual worms to answer a fascinating question: do all worms find the exact same solution in transcriptional space to survive the barium challenge, or does each worm take a different transcriptional path?
