Grid Bottlenecks Drive Hyperscalers to Adopt Behind-the-Meter AI Power

BenBajarin · x · 2026-07-31

As the AI buildout scales rapidly, grid connectivity has become the hardest infrastructure bottleneck to solve. A new analysis suggests that adopting Behind-the-Meter (BTM) onsite power is emerging as a viable choice for hyperscale data centers.

BTM allows tech giants to bypass the lengthy hoops of securing grid connections and accelerate the construction of data center shells and surrounding infrastructure. Although BTM can cost more, it extends the capacity-partner model, enabling hyperscalers to bring compute capacity online faster using onsite power from partners like Bloom Energy while they continue working to secure broader grid connectivity.
