Affine Shifts Strategy: Enhancing Software Engineering Capabilities on Top of Frontier Models

markjeffrey · x · 2026-07-31

Affine announced a shift in its model training strategy, moving away from relying solely on its miners' 35B complete models for global competition. Instead, it will leverage existing frontier models as a foundation.

The team believes that to surpass Kimi K3 in software engineering, there is no need to reinvent the wheel across all dimensions. They plan to build upon frontier models and specifically push the individual capabilities that matter most, breaking through the limitations of the base model. The previous 35B model era was considered a foundational stepping stone for building environments, evaluations, and evolutionary loops.
