As AI compute demands surge, data center noise is triggering severe community backlash. In Michigan, a facility run by Hyperscale Data faces a lawsuit for running 24/7 at 78 decibels; the company offered to buy out residents' homes rather than fix the noise.
This isn't an isolated incident. Microsoft faces a class-action in Wisconsin over similar complaints. In Virginia, one-third of data centers sit within 200 feet of homes. Noise from servers and diesel backup generators can hit 105 decibels—equivalent to a jet overhead—causing headaches, nausea, and sleep disorders, while dragging down nearby property values by up to 20%.
