Ex-OpenAI Employee Leopold's Fund Hit Hard, Liquidates $16B Public Equities
herbiebradley · x · 2026-07-31
Hedge fund Situational Awareness, run by former OpenAI employee Leopold Aschenbrenner, suffered heavy recent losses and rapidly sold a large portion of its $16 billion public equity holdings to Citadel, according to the Financial Times.
The fund will continue to operate as a private investment firm. It retains strong private stakes, including a $5 billion holding in Anthropic. Analysts suggest that despite the public markets setback, the huge mismatch between market sentiment and AI labs' actual revenue ramps presents a massive buying opportunity.
