Google Launches Gemini Robotics 2: 22-DOF Manipulation & On-Device Adaptation
Matt Wolfe · youtube · 2026-07-31
Google released the Gemini Robotics 2 model, marking a massive leap in robotic motor coordination and fine manipulation.
Core Capabilities & Updates:
- Full-body Coordination: Coordinates everything from feet to fingertips, allowing robots to balance and walk while handling delicate objects.
- Fine Manipulation: Features 22 degrees of freedom in its hands, enabling it to seal Ziploc bags, unscrew lightbulbs, and tie trash bag knots.
- On-Device Adaptation: An on-device version runs locally without internet and can adapt to new robot bodies in just a few hours.
For Developers & Integrators:
- This release is the AI software powering hardware partners like Apptronik's Apollo 2, not a physical robot sold directly by Google.
- Developers can access the reasoning model Gemini Robotics ER 2 today via Google AI Studio.
- The full Vision-Language-Action (VLA) and On-Device models are available to hardware partners through Google DeepMind's early access program.
