Anthropic Trims Claude Code System Prompt, Shifts Config to CLAUDE.md
Kindly-Ambition-1796 · reddit · 2026-07-30
Anthropic has significantly trimmed Claude Code's built-in system prompt, advising developers to migrate behavioral instructions into their custom CLAUDE.md files.
The author argues this is the right move: the old prompt contained generic, cargo-cult instructions (like "you are an expert engineer") that newer models no longer need. Removing them eliminates unnecessary token bloat and rigidity. The biggest upside is that default behaviors are now transparent and editable by the user. However, the downside is that developers who relied on those hidden defaults may find their workflows degraded until they manually restore the missing instructions in their configs.
