LeCun: Industry AI Research Still Heavily Relies on the Academic Ecosystem

ylecun · x · 2026-07-30

Yann LeCun shared his perspective on the evolving landscape of fundamental research, responding to an NSF initiative. He noted that while tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Meta have taken up the torch in fundamental research over the past two decades, their innovations are almost entirely built on top of academic work and profit from the broader research ecosystem.

To reflect the current reality where basic research is split roughly evenly between industry and academia, the NSF is launching a first-of-its-kind 4-year PhD program across 30+ universities. The program requires students to spend a year or more embedded with industry partners to conduct research that directly informs their dissertations.
