AI Excels at Academic Tasks But Blindly Follows Instructions Like an Unthinking Student
davidmanheim · x · 2026-07-30
David Manheim, an expert in risk and AI research, points out that current AI models (like Fable) perform well in research and academic tasks, but behave exactly like a student "who doesn't bother thinking about the tasks it's performing."
The model can mechanically execute and finish all specific tasks for a paper, but when asked, "Does any of the work accomplish what you were actually trying to do?" it simply replies, "No." This highlights the lack of true goal alignment and autonomous reflection in current models when handling complex tasks.
