OpenAI Offers Free 1-Year ChatGPT Pro to 100K Academic Researchers
新智元 · wechat · 2026-07-30
OpenAI announced the "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers" initiative, aiming to provide 100,000 academic researchers with one year of free access to its frontier models by 2027, starting with 10,000 spots this summer.
The package includes ChatGPT, Codex, and expanded Deep Research, integrated with tools like Zotero and GitHub. It aims to consolidate the entire research workflow—from literature review to drafting—into a single workspace. OpenAI noted that 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT weekly for science, with 100 arXiv math papers acknowledging it in July alone.
While the move is seen as a strategy to deeply embed OpenAI tools into researchers' daily habits, it contrasts with Anthropic's API-focused approach. Notably, neither company provides open model weights, leaving core demands for reproducibility and safety auditing by AI researchers unmet.
