Developer Uses ChatGPT to Build Open-Source AAC App for His Nonspeaking Brother

acrolicious · reddit · 2026-07-30

A developer shared his experience using ChatGPT to build a custom Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tool for his brother, who is living with quadriplegia and nonspeaking due to Tubb4a-related Leukodystrophy.

His brother had been limited to communicating "yes" or "no" via head turns for nearly a decade. Since existing AAC software couldn't accommodate his brother's highly specific physical abilities, he leveraged ChatGPT to code a tailored solution, successfully restoring his brother's ability to communicate independently.

They have now shared the project online completely free and open-source, creating content to raise awareness for this use case in hopes of helping other families facing similar challenges.
